Oh Spencer, these are the same questions I've really dealt with in the past few years. I'm so thankful to be at a church where these issues are wrestled with regularly - and where we're challenged to work against traditional church values and instead embrace the biblical picture of what we're supposed to be about as Christians. Wish you could come do an internship with our pastors. I think you'd be encouraged. Keep living in the tension - I think it's right where God wants you to be.

Is there really such a difference between how God is portrayed in the two testaments?
God shows great mercy in the OT. He withdraws his punishment from Cain, the nation of Israel, the Ninivites in Jonah. Over and over in the OT he seeks for his people to repent and withholds judgment against them in hope that they turn to him.
Yet in the NT, God is judgmental. He kills Annanais and Sapphira for lying to the church. Jesus is highly judgmental of the religious leaders telling them their condmenation will be greater than Sodom and Gommorah. Revelation shows the greatest outpouring of God's wrath in the entire bible.
I would suggest both Testaments speak of the wrath of God for those who reject Him and the grace and mercy of God for those who repent and accept their need for a savior.

Define what you mean. Which part. What I'm saying? Or what I'm implying? Or neither? I'm confused.

Our school's chapel rings bells every hour on the hour; the bells at noon are slightly different because a melody plays. At home, I will miss hearing their comforting sound. Though, don't get me wrong- I am very excited to come home for Christmas!

Sometime try going inside that Catholic church. If it's old there is probably some beautiful architecture inside. Catholic churches have some of the prettiest architecture. Then when you are inside, look toward the alter. Look for a red candle. When you see that candle, look for the tabernacle. Catholics believe that Jesus remains with us in the tabernacle under the appearance of bread (communion). If you are truly called to become Catholic, you won't just long for the bells...

Spencer,
I have always loved bells too. There was a church just a few blocks away from our old church and they would ring them every
Sunday morning at 11 o'clock.
I loved hearing them.
Your Aunt Cathy played in a bell choir for awhile when she was growing up and it was so beautiful ! I loved their performances.

I thought of you and decided to check your website- random act for me since I haven't read anything here in awhile. And I'm glad I did, because what you wrote was exactly what I needed to hear (well not all of it but you know what I mean.) God really speaks through your writing to me, just as He does when you talk with me. However, you have accepted what I find challenging now. I know that I am where God put me, but I haven't quite found the contentment that you have. I am not unhappy, but I am still discovering how to handle my new situation. Thanks for writing this :) And I miss you tons!
